Week 3 – Freedom in Christ Series
Key Scripture (KJV)
“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
— Galatians 5:16
The Christian life was never intended to be lived in our own strength. The same Lord who saves us also provides everything necessary for a life that pleases Him. While every believer still battles the flesh, God has given His Holy Spirit to lead, strengthen, and guide His people into a life of obedience.
Yielding to the Spirit is not passive. It is a daily, intentional choice to submit ourselves to God’s Word, obey His commands, and follow His leading instead of the desires of our old nature.
The Battle Within
Every child of God knows the struggle between the flesh and the Spirit.
Galatians 5:17 says,
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”
The flesh desires self, sin, pride, and independence from God. The Spirit always leads us toward holiness, love, truth, and obedience.
This conflict reminds us that the Christian life is not without struggle—but it is also not without victory.
Victory comes when we choose to follow the Spirit rather than indulge the flesh.
What Does It Mean to Yield?
To yield means to surrender our own will to God’s will.
It means asking each day:
- Lord, what would You have me do?
- What does Your Word say?
- How can I glorify Christ today?
Yielding is seen in countless daily decisions:
- Choosing forgiveness over bitterness.
- Speaking gracious words instead of angry ones.
- Serving others instead of seeking our own comfort.
- Trusting God instead of giving in to fear.
- Walking in obedience even when it is difficult.
Every act of obedience is an act of yielding.
The Spirit Always Leads According to Scripture
The Holy Spirit never contradicts the Word He inspired.
He does not lead believers away from biblical truth but continually points us back to Christ and His Word.
Jesus said,
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth…”
— John 16:13 (KJV)
As we spend time reading Scripture, praying, and faithfully assembling with the Lord’s people, we become more sensitive to the Spirit’s work in our lives.
The Spirit uses God’s Word to shape our thinking, correct our hearts, and strengthen our walk.
The Fruit of a Yielded Life
When we consistently yield ourselves to the Spirit, our lives begin to reflect the character of Christ.
Galatians 5:22–23 reminds us:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
These qualities cannot be manufactured through human effort.
They are the natural result of a life surrendered to God.
As we walk with Him day by day, others begin to see His work in us.
Freedom Is Found in Obedience
The world often teaches that freedom means doing whatever we want.
Scripture teaches something entirely different.
Real freedom is found in joyful obedience to Christ.
The believer who walks in the Spirit is no longer enslaved by sinful desires. Instead, they experience the liberty that comes from living according to God’s design.
Yielding to the Spirit is not giving up freedom—it is discovering true freedom.
Living It Out
Each morning presents a fresh opportunity to surrender our plans, attitudes, and desires to the Lord.
Instead of asking, “What do I want today?” we can ask, “Lord, how can I honor You today?”
One surrendered decision at a time becomes a life that reflects Christ.
The Spirit faithfully empowers every believer who is willing to walk in humble obedience.
May we daily choose to yield ourselves to God, trusting Him to produce His fruit in our lives and to lead us in paths that bring Him glory.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving Your Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen Your children. Help me to deny the desires of the flesh and to walk in obedience to Your Word. Teach me to yield every area of my life to You. Produce in me the fruit that reflects the character of Christ, and may my life point others to Him. Give me grace to follow You faithfully each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen
